Situated in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa and with its perfect combination of warm waters, strong waves and blowy winds, it comes as to no surprise that Lanzarote is known as one of the best locations in which to windsurf. If you are contemplating visiting Lanzarote between April and September, you can take full advantage of the brilliant conditions both sea and weather wise, and experience for yourself the fun which comes from partaking in this great water sport.

Lanzarote has been a popular holiday destination for holidaymakers for a number of years, with one of its highlights being the fantastic beaches. With warm, clear waters and soft sandy beaches, it makes it the perfect place in which to explore some of the marine life of the Atlantic Ocean, take a ride on a jet ski or simply lie back and bask in the hot sun. However, for windsurfing enthusiasts it is the ultimate paradise in which to practice their sport.

One of the most popular beaches in Lanzarote for windsurfing is Las Cucharas in Costa Teguise. The trade wind here blows side-shore with the wind often picking up during the afternoon. Those who are experienced in the sport will find a wide range of fantastic spots in which to windsurf, all of which will offer you different conditions and a different experience.

For great waves, head to Jameos del Agua in the north east of the Island, but as the waves here are quite rough, this is best only for those who are strong swimmers and are very experienced surfers. Here, the waves break in multiple sections over the volcanic reef and in order to reach a take off site you will need to cross through rough, volcanic terrain so you will need to ensure you also have suitable footwear on.

Those who are beginners to the sport will find a wide range of schools situated on Las Cucharas beach as well as other beaches on the island. These can provide classes for all abilities-even some advanced classes for those who are already experienced with the sport. These organizations will provide you with all the necessary equipment you will need; the basics to the sport and will take you to some of the best spots for beginners where the waters are nice and calm. Some of the beaches within Lanzarote have quite flat waters which are perfect for beginners, especially those who are slightly apprehensive about being in the water.

One of the best areas for beginners is La Santa which is located on the west coast as it offers a sheltered lagoon which is helpful for beginners and Matagorfa, north of Puerto del Carmen which has a mixture of flat and bump and jump conditions which are great for learning in.

If you are looking to visit Lanzarote in order to take advantage of the islands fantastic windsurfing conditions, the ideal time is during the summer months from May to June where the weather and sea conditions will be at their best. This is a great sport to learn which will not only help provide you with some great memories of your vacation, but will also help you top up that tan!
